Call for Papers. Creative Writing Matters 2027: An International Conference for Academics, Teachers and Authors, to be held in Brisbane, Australia on 4–5 June 2027.

Call for Papers

We are pleased to announce the inaugural Creative Writing Matters 2027: An International Conference for Academics, Teachers and Authors, to be held in Brisbane, Australia on 4–5 June 2027.

Creative writing matters: as a practice, a discipline, a field of research, a form of teaching and learning, and a pathway into the writing and publishing industries.

Who is Creative Writing Matters for? CWM brings together academics, teachers, authors, researchers and postgraduate students to share ideas, research, creative work and approaches to teaching and practising creative writing.

Areas of Interest

We invite proposals for papers, presentations, panels, readings, workshops, reflections and other contributions that explore the many ways creative writing is taught, researched and practised.

Possible areas of interest include:

  • Teaching creative writing and creative writing pedagogy

  • Craft, process and creative practice

  • Curriculum design and innovation

  • Assessment and feedback

  • Generative AI, digital creativity and writing technologies

  • Writing for different audiences and readerships

  • Creative writing as research

  • Practice-led and practice-based research

  • The creative writing PhD and HDR supervision

  • Student experience, success and belonging

  • Diversity, inclusion and representation

  • Creative writing and employability

  • Publishing and the writing industry

  • Partnerships between education, authors and the creative industries

  • The changing publishing landscape

  • Craft: Writing across genres, forms and media

  • Creative-critical practice

  • Educational research and teaching impact

  • Writing across schools, universities and professional practice

  • Adaptation and collaboration

We also welcome work-in-progress, creative-critical presentations, readings and discussions of teaching practice. You do not need to fit your contribution into a conventional academic paper: Creative Writing Matters is intended to create space for different forms of knowledge, experience and creative practice.

Earlier submission is highly encouraged.

Proposals are peer reviewed and space is limited to the 2 days of the conference. You do not have to present in order to attend.

The conference will bring together communities that do not always have the opportunity to share the same conversation: academics, teachers and authors. Whether you teach creative writing, research it, write it, publish it or are studying it, we invite you to contribute.
